I
am:a collector of skeletons, heart shaped
rocks, ephemera, dolls, license plates, religious icons
and books - tons of books.
I am:a visual scavenger
of imagery. I borrow imagery from 19th and 20th
century magazines and books to alter and resemble.
I am:a storyteller.
The stories I tell through my work reflect the way I view
the world- often a brash voice in a room of hushed tones.
My sometimes-controversial textiles arise more from conviction
than contrariness. How one might interpret my work is of
course, unquestionably personal.
As a child I was obsessed
with creating my own paper dolls. I would cut and paste
together my own creations from magazines. Often using the
forbidden Playboy - which I found in dumpsters. To buy
commercially made male paper dolls in the late 1950’s
was a rarity. I would re-assemble the pieces to create
my own paper people. This is how I continue to work scavenging,
cutting, pasting, enlarging, reducing and waiting for the
work to sing.
