How I Install My Work

I display my work using a method called a museum mount. It is very simple, professional and easy to do.

The quilt is hung with two wooden lathe bars - that have 1st been cut to size, holes drilled, sanded and then spay painted white (often the color of gallery walls). Next the male or hooked side of sticky backed Velcro® is cut, stuck and for extra security stapled to the wood bars. The width of the Velcro® depends of the weight of the work.

On the back of the quilt - both top and bottom, sides if necessary - fabric sleeves are sewn, turned right side out and the ends sewn shut. The female or fuzzy side of the sticky backed Velcro® is stuck on to the fabric sleeves and for extra security machine sewn. Finally the Velcro® sleeve is hand sewn to the back of the quilt.

The wooden bars are screwed to the wall, then the quilt is mounted/ sandwiched to Velcro® to Velcro®. This will allow the work to hang flush to the wall.

Shipping Tubes
Elizabeth Busch introduced me to Sono tubes and I thank her. I ship my work in waxed heavy duty paper tubes called Sono tubes, Handiform tubes, etc. The tubes are used in the construction industry to pour cement in to make columns. They are available in a variety of sizes, inexpensive and can be purchased at home improvement stores in the cement section.

Cut the tube to size, wipe the inside with a damp cloth. Cut 4 circles of cardboard using the end of the tube for a template. Tape 2 of the cardboard circles to the one end. I use duct tape for the 1st layer and then cover it with clear strapping tape. Label this end - NOT THIS END!- so it won’t be opened by mistake.

To make a removable end cap- cut a section of cardboard at least 8" wide and long enough to go along the tube and overlap by several inches. Place the 2 remaining cardboard circles on the top of the tube, roll the cardboard strip around the tubes - not to tight - and tape the top circles to the cardboard. Cover the entire cap with duct tape - next a layer or two of clear tape. Make a label that states OPEN HERE and place it where the cap and tube meet when closed. Place you name, address etc. in the :cap, tube, on all wrapping materials, under the shipping label on the outside of the tube. Inside the tube - in an envelope I include: Installations instructions, return shipping label and instructions, extra plastic bag (I use clear medium heavy weight soda/beer recycling bags). They can be purchased by special order from

Your local independent grocery store or from companies that specialize in plastics.

Remember your shipping container must be able to withstand the often brutal hands and feet of the "Bubba's" - these are the people that will be pushing, tossing and yes- drop kicking your work until it reaches the final destination.

Supplies needed:

1. Tube cardboard
2. Utility knife
3. Duct tape
4. Clear strapping tape

Preparing Work to Ship
I roll my work face side out on a cardboard tube that can be obtained free from most fabric stores. Next the work is rolled in heavy duty paper and tied. Finally inserted and rolled in 2 clear plastic bags and tied. Remember to label everything.

This is what I send with my work:

Installation Instructions
The Quilt is hung with two wooden bars with Velcro®(m*). On the back of the Quilt-(both top & bottom) are the strips of Velcro®(f*). The wooden bars are attached to the wall by nail or screw, then the Quilt is mounted Velcro®(m) to Velcro®(f). This will allow the Quilt to hang flush to the wall.

*(m) - male side
*(f)- female side

Shipping Instructions
Please roll the Quilt on the cardboard tube FACE SIDE OUT when re-packing to ship. Place the Quilt in the original wrapping paper & roll, then double bag in the clear plastic bags. Tie securely. Place Quilt in the shipping tube and tape the end to secure. The return shipping label is in an envelope inside the tube.

Please use UPS Ground when returning work.

Thank-you for the careful handling of my work.
